Hurricane Season 2025

Today starts to 2025 hurricane season.
As many of you know we sustained damage from hurricane Milton last fall and we are still waiting on insurance money to come through.

Pro tip - hire your own insurance adjuster.
The one the insurance company sends works for them and wants to pay out as little as possible.

We've been asked by many about hurricane preparedness, supplies we use and items that helped after the storm as well:
You can power it with gas or propane which is great if you're worried about being able to obtain fuel when gas stations run out!
Make sure you don't leave fuel in the line when you're done using it. Turn on the choke and let it run until the fuel is out of the line.
We've since bought water diverters for around the property, but if you're able to use sandbags they're great until you find out you can't get
enough or they've run out of bags, or closed the sandbag location, or whatever the case may be....
Quick Dams can help you like sandbags. Make sure you put down some sort of moisture barrier such as painter's plastic underneath it and then

use these to weigh it down and hold it in place. (We didn't unfold the plastic completely, if I recall we left it doubled up....)
They also have a 5 foot version of Quick Dams too!

If you have things around your yard that the wind can pick up, get them secured so they don't blow into your home or one of your neighbors.
If they won't fit into your garage, try an extra room. During a hurricane we once had all our lawn furniture in the middle of our living room!!

We also trimmed branches that we thought could be a potential problem before the season started.
After the storm....
We didn't have one to use, but a friend who flooded used a Floor Squeegee to get the water out.
It looks like a great idea to me!
You could also use a Leaf Blower. (We like Worx yard tools and have one similar to THIS.)

Or a Shop Vac. (We have a Dewalt 12 gallon poly wet/dry 5.5 HP Shop Vacuum.)
The Lasko X-Blower 6 Position High Velocity Blower Fans helped us dry things out.
They were reasonably priced and got the job done. Because of the size of the area, we needed more than one,
but they worked like champs!!
We also used a Hisense 50 Pint Portable Dehumidifier to dry things out.
We've continued to use the two we purchased since the storm because it's been a bit humid this year.
We've decided we will likely keep one in our garage set to run if the humidity reaches a certain level year round!

Once we thought things were starting to dry out, we used a Moisture Meter to tract the progress to see how much moisture was still in the walls.
(Even though we knew they'd need to be removed and replaced....)
I found clothes out in the garage that we didn't really want to throw out, so between the OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder and
the Lysol Disinfectant Laundry Sanitizer we were able to salvage some of them....
We are big fan's of DampRid Moisture Absorbers around our house.
When your power is out, it doesn't take long for humidity to find it's way in.

We use them all year around - just in case!
There are disaster supply kit checklists all over the internet you can access.
Be as proactive and ready as possible because when the time comes you will surely forget things that could be important.
Let's pray that hurricane season 2025 will give us a well deserved break this year, and hopefully the more prepared we are, the less we'll need to use!!
